TwInbox 2.2.0.120 – Mandatory Upgrade

Twitter has changed the way they handle authorization for 3rd party application. We have updated TwInbox to comply with the new requirements. The new version is available for download today from our website.

Upgrade is required to see direct messages

As the result of the above changes, the old versions of TwInbox will be unable to fetch your direct messages starting on June 30. In order to continue receiving direct messages in TWInbox, you must install the new version.

Re-login after the upgrade

After you have installed the new version, you will need to re-authorize your Twitter accounts in TwInbox. It is a simple process – just click the “Sign In to Twitter” button in the Account Options window, then enter your user name and password.

Filing Outlook messages in multiple folders

As you know, SimplyFile predicts into which Outlook folder you will want to file any particular message. So to move a message to that folder, all you need to do is click a button. Much faster and less error-prone than drag and drop.

Now, what if you would like to file a message in to more than one folder? SimplyFile has a way to do that as well. Just press the Ctrl key while filing the message. When you use ‘Ctrl + File Message’, SimplyFile leaves a copy of the message you are filing in its original folder, so you can file that message again into another folder.

Using Outlook QueryBuilder to define advanced criteria for Search Folders and Advanced Find

Outlook has a hidden feature, QueryBuilder, which can be very useful for those of you who need to define complex criteria for Search Folders or Advanced Find. It allows you to specify a conditions on most message fields; combine multiple conditions with logical AND or OR operators; build hierarchical conditions, etc. For example, you can do things like this:

This Microsoft Knowledge Base article talks about how to enable Query Builder. Note, the article only mentions Outlook 98, 2000 and 2002. The same instructions will apply to all versions of Outlook. Use the following numbers in the registry path:

  • Outlook 98 – 8.0
  • Outlook 2000 – 9.0
  • Outlook 2002 – 10.0
  • Outlook 2003 – 11.0
  • Outlook 2007 – 12.0
  • Outlook 2010 – 14.0
  • Outlook 2013 – 15.0
  • Outlook 2016 – 16.0

Do not forget to restart Outlook for changes to take effect.

Outlook startup performance tip (with Exchange over HTTP)

If you use Outlook with an Exchange server and if your Outlook uses an HTTP proxy to communicate with the Exchange server, this tip might help you significantly improve the time it takes to launch Outlook. The improvement is not guaranteed, it only works in some configurations. But it is very easy to try.

Try enabling both of the following options, then restart Outlook. Do not change any other settings.

  • “On fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP”
  • “On slow networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP”.

Exchange Proxy Settings Connect Options

To get to that option:

Outlook 2010 and 2013:

  • File tab
  • Account Settings
  • Select “Microsoft Exchange” account, click “Change”
  • Click “More Settings”
  • Switch to the “Connections” tab
  • Click “Exchange Proxy Settings…”

Outlook 2007:

  • Select “Tools->Account Settings” menu command
  • Select “Microsoft Exchange” account, click “Change”
  • Click “More Settings”
  • Switch to the “Connections” tab
  • Click “Exchange Proxy Settings…”

Outlook 2003:

  • Select “Tools->E-mail Accounts” menu command
  • Click “Next”
  • Select “Microsoft Exchange” account, click “Change”
  • Click “More Settings”
  • Switch to the “Connections” tab
  • Click “Exchange Proxy Settings…”

Do not forget to restart Outlook for changes to take effect.

Indexing and Searching PDF Content Using Windows Search

Several customers of EZDetach and MessageSave have asked how to configure Windows Search (built into Windows), also formerly known as Windows Desktop Search, to index and search PDF files. Short answer – you need to install a PDF iFilter. Read on for a more detailed explanation.

Step 1 – Check if you have PDF iFilter installed

Go to: “Control Panel->Indexing Options->Advanced Options->File Types”  and check the text next to PDF extension. If you see “PDF Filter”, it means you have the right filter already installed. Skip to Step 3.

Step 2 – Install PDF iFilter

As of the time of writing this article, the right steps depend on whether you are using a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows.

Step 3 – Enable PDF content indexing

Open “Control Panel->Indexing Options->Advanced Options->File Types”, make sure you see “PDF Filter” next to the PDF extension. Select “Index Properties and File Contents” under “How should this file be indexed?”. Click “OK” to close this window.

Step 4 – Configure folders to be indexed

Make sure the folders which contain the PDF files you would like to search are listed under “Included Locations” in “Control Panel->Indexing Options”. If they are not, click “Modify” and add them.

Windows will start building an index of your content. This step might take a long time depending up on the number of documents. You can check indexing progress at the top of the “Indexing Options” window. Once Windows Search finishes building the index, you should be able to search for the contents within PDF file by simply typing the text in the search box.

Outlook 2007 slow folder switching, missing AutoArchive – KB2412171

Microsoft has identified several issues with a recent Outlook updated (KB2412171).

If you are experiencing one of the following issues, you might be affected:

  • Slow performance while switching between Outlook folders.
  • Missing AutoArchive functionality.
  • Issues with password authentication while sending or receiving email.

Microsoft recommends uninstalling update KB2412171 if you experience any of the above symptoms. Only Outlook 2007 is affected. You can find more details in this article. Microsoft also published  KB2485531 on this issue.

Update: On January 11 2011, Microsoft issued an update which is supposed to fix the three issues listed above.
