How to find and disable Outlook 2007 Add-ins and plugins

Disabling unnecessary plugins is a great way to make your Outlook start faster, run more reliably, take less memory. In Outlook 2007 Add-ins are listed under “Tools->Trust Center->Addins”. There are two types of Addins – COM Add-ins and Exchange Client Extensions.

Disable COM Add-ins

To disable COM Add-ins:

  • Select “COM Add-ins” in the Manage drop-down at the bottom of the Trust Center window and click “Go”.
  • Uncheck any add-ins that you are not using.

Note: If you see “The connected state of Office Add-ins registered in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE cannot be changed” see this article for help with disabling those add-ins.

Disable Exchange Client Extensions

Exchange Client Extensions are a different type of Add-ins. To disable those:

  • Select “Exchange Client Extensions” in the Manage drop-down at the bottom of the Trust Center window and click “Go”.
  • Uncheck any add-ins that you are not using.

Do not forget to restart Outlook for changes to take effect.

    1. its perfect, i got very good result with above information. now my outlook is running like fast and furies cars 😉

      1. I have searched many Q & A forums including ESET anti-virus website for information only to find the same answer of deleting the Extend.Dat file which didn’t fix my problem.

I’ve been building and working on computers since before the internet but have never used all the options found in various software packages.

Your solution of finding >tools > trust center > add-ins fixed my problem. I unchecked ESET plug-in and no more error messages. Thank you very much.

  1. I try to uninstall Add-ins from Outlook 2007 but keep getting the must have permission from administrator. Well, I’m the administrator so why can’t I delete certain add-ins?

  2. Hi,

I have a machine installed with SAP business One plug in, and it causes outgoing mail stuck in the “Outbox” forever and unable to send out.The plugin is still active after I restart outlook, even though I had disabled the plugin succesfully by running outlook as an administrator.
    Please advise.

    1. Hi Wilson,

The best thing to do would be to contact SAP support for help.

Alternatively, if you prefer a “brute force” solution, you could just find the add-in dll and delete it.

  3. Office, 2007…. shows no add ins but I still get the message…

you get points though, other sites tell us to look for the Exchange Client Extension…… I don’t have that…

    help?
